Green Niagara Catholic – Ontario EcoSchools
Ontario EcoSchools is an environmental education program designed to assist school communities in the development of ecological literacy and environmental practices to become environmentally responsible citizens and reduce the ecological footprints of our schools.
Niagara Catholic has been a leader in the province since its initial involvement in the program. In the 2007-2008 school year Niagara Catholic lead the province with 47 schools certified as Ontario EcoSchools and for the last three years, Niagara Catholic has been the only school board in Ontario to have every school in its board receive Ontario EcoSchools Certification.
In addition to obtaining 100 per cent certification, Niagara Catholic also increased the number of gold recipients from 33 schools in 2010 to 37 in 2011. Twenty-one schools received silver certification while one obtained a bronze.
Litterless lunches, tree planting, turning off lights and computer monitors, recycling printer and toner cartridges, purchasing reusable drinking bottles, recycling scrap paper, using porcelain dishes for lunch, photocopying on both sides of documents and using email over paper are just a few of the ways the EcoSchools program is coming to life in our schools.
