Provincial Heritage Fair Report

Daniela Lozano and Martin Bradley, Grade 6 students at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Elementary School in Grimsby, were Niagara Catholic’s two representatives at the Provincial Heritage Fair, which was held June 10th and 11th in Toronto. They were selected to represent Niagara Catholic after each received perfect scores in four out of five categories by judges during Niagara Catholic’s Regional Heritage Fair, which was held at Brock University in April.

The Provincial Heritage Fair is a non-adjudicated event, which provides students in Grades 4-8 with the opportunity to showcase their projects to a wider audience. Daniela and Martin were two of 70 students from across Ontario to take part in the fair.

The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, was the guest speaker at the Showcase Opening Ceremonies.  His Honour took time to speak with Martin and Daniela about their projects.

While in Toronto, students had the opportunity to visit “The Encampment,” at Fort York, as well as The Royal Ontario Museum.

“Highway of Heroes – The Spirit of Our Nation”, by Daniela Lozano:
Daniela’s project honours Canada’s fallen heroes who have travelled on the Highway of Heroes since the first fallen soldiers returned from Afghanistan in 2002.  It also emphasizes the spirit of our nation with the thousands of people coming out to the bridges and overpasses to show their respect, say thank you, and show families that the country is sharing their grief.  Importantly, it assures the soldiers currently serving, that they have their country’s support.  This project is Daniela’s personal tribute to our Canadian heroes and the huge sacrifice they made.

“Yonge Street”, by Martin Bradley:
Yonge Street is explored from its beginnings as an early Aboriginal trail to its status as one of the most successful commercial and economic centers in Canada today.  Yonge Street was established as an important trade and military route in early Upper Canada. The history of its many years of construction and development are followed highlighting many Canadian firsts and successes.  A collage of pictures taken on present day Yonge Street reflects its history in architecture.
