Niagara Catholic District School Board

PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT & RECOGNITION
(PLAR)

Adopted: January 28, 2003
Revised:

Policy No. 400.4

STATEMENT OF POLICY

The Niagara Catholic District School Board supports the implementation of Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR), which is the formal evaluation and credit-granting process whereby students may obtain credits for prior learning. This includes the knowledge and skills that students have acquired, in both formal and informal ways, outside secondary school. Students have their knowledge and skills evaluated against the expectations in the Ontario curriculum in order to earn credits towards an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

Religious Education credits cannot be earned through the PLAR challenge in the Niagara Catholic District School Board.

The Director of Education will establish Administrative Guidelines for the implementation of the policy in the Niagara Catholic District School Board.
