Ted van der Zalm, a teacher at Denis Morris Catholic High School, was recognized on November 25 by Canada’s Governor General David Johnston with the Governor General’s Meritorious Service Medal for his years of commitment to the people of the mountainous region of Japala, Guatemala.

Mr. van der Zalm is the founder of Wells of Hope, which helps dig wells for people living in Guatemala. Through Wells of Hope and its associated project, Packs of Hope, Mr. van der Zalm, members of the Niagara Catholic community and residents from across Niagara support the community of Japala, which is one of the poorest areas in the nation.

We are extremely proud of Mr. van der Zalm for all he and his family do to provide fresh water and aid to people in Japala. The honour is richly deserved.
