Building Community in Welland

Niagara Catholic students participating in classes at The Launch Centre this semester have taken on a big project to build community for seniors in Welland.

Throughout the semester, the students began drawing up plans for a seniors community garden on Hellems Avenue, converting a vacant patch of scrubby grass to a thriving space soon to be filled with flowers and vegetables planted by members of the community.

The initiative is a partnership between the Downtown Welland BIA and the Niagara Launch Centre. And while the funds to create the multiple garden beds – all carefully designed by students with seniors various mobility needs in mind – came for senior’s programming, anyone in the community can stop by to help weed, plant a row of flowers or veggies and sit in the new pavilion and enjoy the day.

We’re exceptionally proud of the way the students worked so thoughtfully and diligently throughout the entire planning and construction process, and represented their school, and the Board, so well out in the community.
