Program Details

The Aviation SHSM offers high school students an exhilarating opportunity to explore the world of aviation, including flight theory, aircraft maintenance, and aerospace technology as they soar into thrilling aviation career pathways.

This program includes:

A Bundle of Credits: Students must complete a bundle of nine senior credits, which includes:

·     Four major credits in Aviation which can include courses in flight training, business, and aircraft maintenance. 

·      One English credit.

·      One Mathematics credit.

·     One additional credit in Business, Science, or Canadian or World Studies, or an  additional major credit.

Co-operative Education

Two Co-operative Education Credits related to the Aviation Sector. Apprenticeship, College, or Workplace bound students can take FOUR or more credits in co-op while fulfilling graduation requirements.

 

Certifications and Training: Students must complete sector-recognized certifications and training, such as:

  •         Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C
  •          Standard First Aid
  •          Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

 Experiential Learning: Opportunities for hands-on learning through co-operative education placements, job shadowing, and field trips.

·      Reach Ahead Experiences: Activities that connect students with their postsecondary goals, such as visits to colleges, universities, or   workplaces.

·      Sector-Partnered Experiences: Activities that involve working with industry partners to gain real-world experience.

Example of Experiential Learning 

An Aviation SHSM program could visit a could visit an airport or an aviation training centre. They would tour the facilities, interact with aviation professionals, and participate in a flight simulation, gaining insights into aviation operations and career opportunities in the field.

 

Careers Pathways:

Workplace Pathway:

Graduates can pursue careers such as aircraft maintenance technician, flight dispatcher, or customer service representative at airports.

College Pathway:

Students can enrol in programs like Aviation Management, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, or Flight Training, leading to careers such as aviation manager, aircraft maintenance engineer, or commercial pilot.

 University Pathway:

Students can pursue degrees in Aerospace Engineering, Aviation Science, or Business Administration with a focus on aviation management, leading to careers such as aerospace engineer, airline manager, or aviation consultant.

Apprenticeship Pathway:

Students may pursue apprenticeships in areas like aircraft maintenance or avionics technology, leading to roles such as licensed aircraft maintenance engineer or avionics technician.

Training Topic

Description

Anti-Oppression and Allyship Training

Training focused on understanding and addressing systemic oppression, promoting inclusivity, and becoming effective allies in diverse environments.

Compass/Map/Global Positioning System (GPS)

Training on using traditional navigation tools like compasses and maps, as well as modern GPS technology for accurate location tracking and navigation.

Confined Space Awareness

Training on recognizing and safely working in confined spaces, including understanding potential hazards and emergency procedures.
