Program Details

The Information & Communications Technology (ICT) SHSM program equips high school students with essential certifications and hands-on experience, preparing them for further education and exciting careers in fields such as software development, network administration, and digital media within the ICT industry. This program includes:

      A Bundle of Credits: Students must complete nine senior credits, including:

·    Four major credits in ICT studies, including courses like computer science, digital media, networking, and software development.

·     One Grade 11 and one Grade 12 English credit.

·     One additional credit in mathematics.

·     One additional credit in science, social sciences and humanities, or an additional major credit.

Two Co-operative Education Credits related to Information and Communications Technology. Apprenticeship, College, or Workplace bound students can take SIX credits in co-op while fulfilling graduation requirements.

Certifications and Training: Students must complete sector-recognized certifications and training, such as:

  •          Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C
  •           Standard First Aid
  •          WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)

 Experiential Learning: Opportunities for hands-on learning through co-operative education placements, job shadowing, and field trips.

      Reach Ahead Experiences: Activities that connect students with their postsecondary goals, such as visits to colleges, universities or workplaces.  

·     Sector-Partnered Experiences: Activities involving industry partners to gain real-world experience. 

 

       Example of Experiential Learning

A ICT SHSM field trip could visit a leading tech company or a data center. They would tour the facility, interact with IT professionals, and learn about cutting-edge technologies and cybersecurity practices. This experience would provide a deep dive into the ICT industry, showcasing career paths and the importance of innovation and data security.

      Workplace Pathway:

Careers such as IT support specialist, web developer, network technician or digital media specialist.

     College Pathway:

Programs like Computer Systems Technician, Network Engineering, or Digital Media Production.

      University Pathway:

Degrees in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or Digital Media.

      Apprenticeship Pathway:

      Roles such as IT technician or network administrator.
