Program Details

 The Sports Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program provides high school students with essential certifications and hands-on experience, preparing them for education and exciting careers in fields such as sports management, coaching, athletics training, and sports marketing. Program details include:

 A Bundle of Credits: Students must complete a bundle of nine senior credits, which includes:

  ·   Four major credits in Sports, which can include courses in physical education, kinesiology, or sports management. 

  • One English credit.
  • One Mathematics credit.
  • One additional credit in Science or Business studies and Social Sciences or Humanities, or an additional major credit.

 Two or More Co-operative Education Credits related to the Sports. Apprenticeship, College, or Workplace bound students can take SIX credits in co-op while fulfilling graduation requirements.

Certifications and Training: Students must complete sector-recognized certifications and training, such as:

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C
  • Standard First Aid
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

Experiential Learning: Opportunities for hands-on learning through co-operative education placements, job shadowing, and field trips.

  • Reach Ahead Experiences: Activities that connect students with their postsecondary goals, such as visits to colleges, universities, or workplaces.
  • Sector-Partnered Experiences: Activities that involve working with industry partners to gain real-world experience.

An example of a field trip for a Sports Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) could be a visit to a professional sports facility, such as the Rogers Centre in Toronto. Students might get a behind-the-scenes tour, meet with team members from the Toronto Blue Jays, and attend a game, providing insights into sports management, event planning, and athletic careers.

Workplace Pathway:

Careers in the workplace pathway include roles such as fitness instructors and recreation program leaders. These positions often involve working directly with clients to improve their fitness and well-being.

College Pathway:

In the college pathway, you might pursue careers like recreation facility manager or sports event coordinator. These roles focus on managing sports facilities and organizing events.

University Pathway:

University pathways can lead to careers like athletic therapist or sports psychologist. These professions require advanced education and focus on the physical and mental well-being of athletes.
