Baron Stipancic breathed some life into the Blessed Trinity Thunder at the most opportune moment.
The 17-year-old, Grade 12 student broke a 1-1 tie with a goal late in the first half as the Thunder defeated St. Edmund Campion from Brampton 2-1 Thursday as the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSSA) boys AAA soccer championships kicked off in Grimsby.
“It was the last play of the first half,” Stipancic said. “Cross came in, headed off my right back, and I just hit a back heel, and it went in. I’m pretty sure it hit the defender, but it went in.”
It was a crucial goal in a crucial situation for the host Thunder, who dropped a 1-0 decision to St. Patrick High School of Thunder Bay in their opening game of the tournament earlier in the day.
Stipancic admitted the Thunder took the loss hard.
“Going into it we were like we were pretty down in the dumps, so we kind of figured, worst comes to worst at least we’d have some fun out there, so we kind of mostly let loose,” he said. “We were going to do our best and have a lot of fun, and in the end, we got out with it.”
