Sydney Ray is ready to take the next step in her track and field career.
The 15-year-old, Grade 10 student at Notre Dame had an impressive Grade 9 season, placing seventh in the 1,500 and 10th in the 800 at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) meet.
This time around Ray is looking for a spot on the podium.
“My goals for this year are to just keep building, PB-ing and hopefully medal this year in one of the events,” Ray said Wednesday at the Niagara Catholic Athletic Association track and field meet at the Niagara Olympic Club.
Ray’s personal best times are 2:19.62 in the 800 and 4:46.49 in the 1,500.
Ray, who placed first in the novice girls 1,500 and 800 races Wednesday, used last year as a learning experience.
“It was some really great practise, especially because our zone is quite competitive,” she said. “We have a lot of girls who are in my grade and who can also run very fast so I think it’s just building upon that and using them to help get faster.
“It’s been really helpful for me.”
