This spring, Adefemi Ijanusi had an idea.
What if, the Grade 10 student at Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary School thought, he, his younger brother Ademide (Grade 9) and younger sister Adeloa (Grade 7, St. Martin Catholic Elementary School) could collect 50 books and send them to students in Nigeria.
"What started as a simple challenge quickly grew into something much more significant. Earlier this spring, my brother Ademide, my sister Adeola, and I launched the Book It Forward Challenge. Our goal was to collect 50 novels and storybooks for students in Nigeria. Inspired by the joy of finishing a great book and wanting others to share that experience, we invited our school communit(ies) to help out. The response was nothing short of incredible. We didn't just reach our goal we collected over 250 books. We distributed these books across three schools in Akure, Gbagada, and Ebute Metta, (Nigeria). They reached students from nursery to secondary schools.
This initiative was about more than just giving books; it was about providing opportunities. Books can educate, inspire, and help students see new possibilities. They offer relatable stories, lessons that apply to their lives, and a shared experience that can bring people together. A single book can spark a friendship, start a conversation, or introduce a new way of thinking. This would not have been possible without the community behind it. Students, teachers, and supporters, including my sister Adeola and members of St. Martin Catholic Elementary School came together with a shared purpose. The joy on the students’ faces when they received the books highlighted the real impact, not just stories but, connection, inspiration, and growth. For me, this initiative was also about giving back to the community that helped shape who I am. Book It Forward showed what can happen when people come together with generosity and intention."
Congratulations, Adefemi, Ademide, and Adeola, and the BT and St. Martin communities, for your kindness and generosity!
