Celebrating Indigenous Filmmakers
Celebrating Indigenous Filmmakers at Lakeshore Catholic
Posted on 05/15/2025

On May 15th, Niagara Catholic students experienced the power of Indigenous cinema at REEL Canada’s Celebrating Indigenous Stories Film Festival, hosted at Lakeshore Catholic High School. As part of the Grade 11 NBE course—Understanding Contemporary First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Voices—students explored short films that celebrated Indigenous identity, resilience, and culture.
We were honoured to welcome
Asia Youngman, an award-winning Cree-Métis filmmaker, for a virtual visit during the Celebrating Indigenous Stories Film Festival. As the director of N'xaxaitkw and director of photography for Now is the Time, Asia shared her insights on the power of Indigenous storytelling and the importance of representation in film.
Guiding the conversation was our incredible moderator
Jamie Whitecrow, who brought thoughtful questions and energy to the discussion.
Today marked a truly inspiring experience for our students as they connected with Indigenous voices shaping the future of cinema.
