Empowering the Next Generation

Empowering the Next Generation Through Stories of Resilience and Sport
Posted on 04/30/2025

Last week, Niagara Centre for Independent Living ambassadors, disability rights advocates and Parasport athletes Jim and Loretta Davis visited St. Ann (St. Catharines) CES, Assumption CES, and Canadian Martyrs CES. They spoke to students about accessibility, inclusion, adapted sports, and the upcoming Parasport Games taking place in Niagara this May. Jim and Loretta are also the co-founders of the Brock Niagara Penguins, a sports program for youth and young adults with physical disabilities.

Also last week, Sheena Darnley—a Notre Dame graduate and a member of Canada’s National Women’s Para Hockey Team—visited Loretto CES, Father Hennepin CES, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel CES. She shared her journey in adapted sports and encouraged students to pursue their dreams.

What an inspiring week! It’s always exciting to welcome back Niagara Catholic alumni to share their stories and inspire the next generation.

The Parasport Games are coming to  Niagara on May 30th to June 1st. The games showcase sports adapted for athletes with disabilities. Thank you to Parasport Ontario and the Ministry of Sport who partnered with the Niagara Catholic Accessibility Committee to provide these school presentations.
