The Saint Michael Mustangs captured the school’s first Niagara Catholic Athletic Association Zone 2 boys varsity baseball title Monday with a 4-2 victory over the Blessed Trinity Thunder at George Taylor Field in St. Catharines.
The Mustangs, who punched their ticket to the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association) SOSSA playdowns Tuesday with the win, last won a championship in 2008 before the Catholic and pubic boards held separate championships.
“We’re very proud of our team,” Saint Mike’s coach Andrew Chase said. “They put together two complete games today and were mentally tough.”
The Mustangs topped the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 4-2 in a semifinal game in the morning before riding the arms of Luke Cukierski and Jonah Cukierski in the final.
