Saint Paul’s Myles Quintyn has made a name for himself in the single.

The Grade 11 student won the junior men’s single at last year’s Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association championships and this spring the 17-year-old finished first in the senior boys single at the Stotesbury Cup.

One might think Quintyn would be testing his mettle at this weekend’s Schoolboy but instead he was competing in Sunday’s finals in the mixed double and quad.

“I wanted to try something different and race with other people. This whole season and last season I have been basically by myself,” he said.

He combined with Virginia Gates to win the double in impressive fashion. It certainly didn’t feel like a mixed boat for Quintyn.

“Virginia is so powerful, you can’t feel the difference. It feels no different than racing with a guy. The speed’s still there, the rate is still there, the power is still there, it just feels like another double.”
