The Saint Paul Patriots boys soccer team is heading back to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AA championships for the fourth time in the past five years.

Playing on their home field Thursday, the Patriots punched their ticket to OFSAA with a 5-2 victory over the Governor Simcoe Redcoats in the Southern Ontario Secondary School Association final.

“We knew we had a strong team just based on previous years. There’s other team that had a lot of Grade 12s but we didn’t have a ton on our team,” Saint Paul coach Aldo Sica said. “During the year, we were 3-3-1 and last week we went to Holy Cross, who finished first in the league, and we beat them 7-0. In the last two or three weeks, our kids have played extremely well to take us to this path that we are on.”

At OFSAA, the Patriots won an antique bronze medal in 2022 and a gold medal in 2023.

“We are going to go, we are going to play hard and like (assistant coach) Julio (Candeloro) said, we are going to try and compete. If we can medal, it’s a bonus,” he said. “You always go there with one thing in mind and obviously it is to medal.”
