The Saint Paul Patriots took a giant step towards their goal of competing for an Ontario championship with a convincing 74-45 triumph over the Saint Francis Phoenix for the Niagara Catholic Athletics Zone 4 senior boys AA basketball championship Thursday at Saint Francis.

The defending champion Phoenix were 7-0 in the regular season, including an 87-74 win over the Patriots just before the Christmas break.

“You know, it’s probably the hardest team we’ve come through,” Saint Paul coach Michael Doodeman said. 

The Patriots, who blew a 55-44 lead in last year’s zone final versus St. Francis, had no problem this time dealing with the Phoenix in their home gym.
