While most high school students start their mornings racing the clock to catch the bus, Hayley Crivea begins hers long before the sun rises - warming bottles, changing diapers, and soothing tired cries. She even manages to get in a quick run to keep her in shape, all before making her way to school.

Crivea’s version of “homework” isn’t just assignments and studying, she also manages the endless demands of two little lives who rely on her for everything.

It’s a daunting task for any parent, never mind one who is just 17 years old. Despite the obstacles she faces, the proud mom of two is not only graduating high school - she’s doing it with amazing grades, a $3,000 Destination Niagara Award, and a clear path toward a career as a Personal Support Worker that is about to be launched at Niagara College.

For the last two years, Hayley has been a model student at Strive Niagara, who is known among her peers and teachers as a dedicated student and mother, with impeccable attendance and a genuine passion for pursuing her interest in science. She attends classes there Monday to Friday through Niagara Catholic’s Pope Francis Centre, which offers support to students who are young parents.

“This program (Strive) made it easier for me to choose a program at Niagara College and apply,” she said. “Once I was connected with Jordan Milton, (Niagara College’s Outreach and Education Coordinator) I knew I would be choosing Niagara College as the next step in my Education.”

Crivea was presented with a ceremonial $3,000 cheque by Milton and DiValentino from Niagara College; money that will be deposited into an account at the school to offset the tuition cost for her one-year program.

Equally humble and determined, Crivea’s accomplishments were celebrated by the Pope Francis Centre’s staff, including Outreach Program Coordinator Brittany Weaver, teacher Eugene D”Orazio and Strivie’s Director of Operations Micki Horton. Niagara College staff Jordan Milton and Evan DiValentino also shared their excitement for Hayley as she was presented with her scholarship.

With the help of Strive Niagara, students like Hayley have the chance to access a supportive and safe environment that is academically focused and meets the needs of a young parent. Students are also encouraged to attend the facility throughout the summer months to continue to get support and life skills training.

With Strive Niagara’s resources at her fingertips and the Niagara Catholic community right behind her, we are so excited to see Hayley achieve great things. Congratulations Hayley, Niagara College is very lucky to have such a determined student coming their way!

Hayley is one of several Niagara Catholic graduating students to receive Niagara College’s $3,000 Destination Niagara admission scholarship. We’ll highlight them in a separate post next week. We’re proud of each of you!
