Xavier Griffith ended the 62nd Annual Standard High Basketball Tournament with a mouse and gash under one eye and a MVP trophy under his arm.

He wasn’t sure how he ended up with the cut but thinks it might have came when he drove to the rim and Simcoe’s Noah Budgell tried to stop him.

The MVP trophy was for a great overall performance. He averaged 13.3 points per game in the tournament, including eight in the championship game that the top-seeded Reds won 59-48 over the second-seeded Governor Simcoe Redcoats Friday night before a packed gym at St. Catharines Collegiate.

“I am going to remember the fans and the cut probably,” Griffith said with a smile.

Last week before the tournament started, the 16-year-old, who had never played in the tournament before, said he was excited to be a part of it and see what is going on.
