Sofia Sestili shook off a bad case of nerves to score the biggest goal of the season for the Denis Morris Reds.

The 16-year-old, Grade 10 student buried a shot to the corner in penalty kicks as the Reds edged the E.L. Crossley Cyclone 1-0 to capture the Southern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (SOSSA) girls AA soccer championship Thursday at Crossley.

Each team had netted three goals in four attempts before Sestili stepped to the line for all the marbles.

“I felt very scared,” she smiled. “(I wanted) to pick a side and look at the opposite side that I was planning on shooting on and I was taking deep breaths.”

Sestili’s goal put an end to a scoreless marathon that saw the teams battle through regulation time followed by two, 10-minute extra periods before heading to penalty kicks.
