Jacob Shannon’s quest to play football at the post secondary level began to gain traction last summer while playing for the Niagara Spears varsity football team.

“Coming out of Grade 12, I had a couple people who talked to me and I went to camps at Queen’s in Grade 11 and Grade 12. It kind of happened all at once,” the 12B student at Saint Michael said.

After three or four games of the Spears’ season, six or seven universities expressed an interest in him and the 6-foot-3, 265-pound defensive lineman went on a bunch of game day visits.

“My main goal was to play university football and I was working really hard at it and then it all happened,” he said. “I was a little worried and certainly in Grade 12 I had to keep my grades up to give me a chance to go.”

In November, he received an offer from Windsor and then Laurier made him a scholarship offer right after Christmas.
