Program Details

 The Hospitality & Tourism SHSM program focuses on providing students with the skills and knowledge needed for careers in the hospitality and tourism industries. It includes hands-on experiences in areas such as hotel management, culinary arts, event planning, and travel services, preparing students for a dynamic and customer-focused career path. This program includes:

A bundle of credits: Students must complete a bundle of nine senior credits, which includes:

·     Four major credits in hospitality and tourism, which can include courses in culinary arts, hairstyling and sociology.  

·       One English credit.

·       One Mathematics credit.

·       One additional credit Business or Science, or an additional major credit.

 At least TWO Co-operative Education Credits related to Hospitality and Tourism. Apprenticeship, College, or Workplace bound students can take FOUR or more credits in co-op while   fulfilling graduation requirements.

 Certifications and Training: Students must complete sector-recognized certifications and training, such as:

  •            Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C
  •            Standard First Aid
  •            Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

Experiential Learning: Opportunities for hands-on learning through co-operative education placements, job shadowing, and field trips.

·       Reach Ahead Experiences: Activities that connect students with their postsecondary goals, such as visits to colleges, universities, or workplaces.

·       Sector-Partnered Experiences: Activities that involve working with industry partners to gain real-world experience. 

Example of Experiential Learning 

 A Hospitality and Tourism SHSM field trip might visit a luxury hotel to gain firsthand experience in the hospitality industry. They would tour the hotel, interact with staff from various departments, and participate in a   workshop on event planning or culinary arts. This experience would provide valuable insights into hotel operations and customer service, highlighting career opportunities in the hospitality sector.

 Career Opportunities: 

Workplace Pathway:

 Graduates can pursue careers such as cook, server, customer service representative at hotels or restaurants, or entrepreneurs in the hospitality sector.

 College Pathway:

 Students can enrol in programs like Culinary Management, Hospitality Management, or Tourism Management, leading to careers such as chef, hotel manager, or tourism coordinator.

 University Pathway:

 Students can pursue degrees in Hospitality Management, Business Administration with a focus on hospitality, or Tourism Studies, leading to careers such as hospitality manager, business consultant in   the hospitality industry, or tourism manager.

 Apprenticeship Pathway:

 Students may pursue apprenticeships in areas like culinary arts or hotel management, leading to roles such as certified chef or hotel supervisor.
