Congratulations to Emily Hunter, a Grade 12 student at Saint Michael Catholic High School, who is bound for the ivy-covered walls of Harvard University in September.
She is one of 938 students who gained early acceptance to the United States’ oldest university.
Emily first fell in love with the idea of attending Harvard when her family took a trip to Boston. A spur-of-the-moment decision to take a tour of the campus led to her commitment to gaining acceptance at Harvard when she completes her four years as a Mustang. She has accepted the offer and will begin studying science or math – possibly leading to a future in medicine – in September.
Gaining acceptance to Harvard was a long process for Emily. The admissions officers there take a look at applicants’ entire high school transcripts, their standardized test scores, extracurricular involvement, letters of recommendation, and personal essays. It is common for applicants to these Ivy League universities to be interviewed by an alumnus or alumna of the university in addition to these application materials. Special note is also taken of any special circumstances the applicant has faced throughout their life.
Emily certainly has the pedigree for Harvard. She has tutored students in math and science, volunteered with the Niagara Health System and the Youth Ministries at her church, served on the Saint Michael Catholic High School Athletic Council, and as Treasurer of the school’s Student Council, and has held various administrative and executive positions on the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee of Niagara Falls. She has also conducted lung cancer research through Brock University’s Mentorship Program (for students interested in science), and placed in the 99th percentile of all test takers when she took the SAT in Grade 11.
The biggest misconception about attending a school like Harvard, Emily said, is the cost. The school’s admission policy is “need-blind,” which means that all admitted students, both domestic and international, are able to attend, regardless of their ability to pay.
